괴물 (monster)

I created “Monster” to express my frustrations with and highlight the mishandling of sexual assault cases and biases towards rich male perpetrators. Inspired by multiple cases, such as the Burning Sun Scandal, the Nth Room Scandal, the Pelicot Rape Case, the Murder of Junko Furuta, and misogyny in both Korean society and folklore, I tell a story featuring the Korean kumiho, a female fox monster who devours human livers, as she is on the hunt for new prey. The character of the kumiho was created to subvert both the traditional expectation of her being a villain and the modern adaptations of her being humanized for the sake of love and removing her monster characteristics. Through the kumiho and the protagonist, I focus on the strength of women and their bond together, despite the circumstances each face.
The plot reflects situations similar to the assault cases mentioned, albeit with a very different ending from reality. By centering the two women, I explore the realities of injustice where women are frequently denied control over their own circumstances, while reimagining what it means to reclaim power. In my version of this age-old tale, women save each other, and a mythical being eats the perpetrator’s liver.
